The winter fair almanac

Twenty ways to discover the season. These editorial event profiles describe winter traditions and typical seasonal windows, rather than dated local programmes. Malaysia has a tropical climate; natural-lake ice fishing takes place in cold-weather destinations overseas.

Season ribbons are reading guides, not attendance dates. Ask our information team about current organiser notices and locations before travelling.

A first chapter on ice fishing

Ice fishing is angling through an opening in a frozen lake. It combines patient observation, specialised equipment and respect for a constantly changing environment.

How it works

At an authorised location, experienced guides assess conditions and prepare a hole with an auger. An angler lowers a small lure or permitted bait beneath the ice, watches the line and gently retrieves it. Local licences, species limits and habitat protections apply.

Know your equipment

An auger makes the opening; a skimmer clears loose ice. Short rods help control small movements. A shelter reduces wind exposure. Sonar can show depth and fish movement, but cannot establish ice safety. Keep blades covered and holes clearly marked.

Read the water

Gentle vertical jigging moves a lure through the water column; pauses allow time for fish to respond. Depth and timing vary by habitat. Perch, trout, walleye and northern pike feature in different cold-region fisheries; check local species rules.

Seasons & first steps

Many northern destinations have a winter season from roughly December to March, while southern cold regions follow a different calendar. Actual access depends on local conditions, not the month. Start with an experienced local guide, practise knots indoors, keep sessions short and learn careful fish handling. Never transfer live bait or water between lakes.

Winter wonder starts with care

No ice is completely safe. Thickness alone cannot establish safe access. Follow local authorities and trained site staff; stay ashore whenever conditions are uncertain. Malaysian lakes do not naturally provide winter ice fishing conditions.

Ice & weather

Minnesota DNR uses at least 4 inches (about 10 cm) of new, clear ice as a minimum reference for activities on foot. This is not a guarantee or a festival crowd standard. White ice is weaker; currents, thawing and snow conceal hazards. Never apply a walking guideline to vehicles or groups.

Check forecasts, visibility and local closures. Avoid inlets, outlets, moving water and thawing edges. Leave early if conditions change.

Carry & prepare

Use suitable flotation, accessible ice picks, a throw rope, traction aids, insulated layers, waterproof gloves, a whistle and a charged phone in a waterproof pouch. Travel with companions and leave your route and return time with someone ashore.

Cold water can quickly impair breathing and movement. Keep children close to a responsible adult. Ventilate shelters and follow equipment instructions; never use outdoor combustion equipment inside enclosed shelters.

If someone falls through

Call local emergency services immediately. Do not rush onto weak ice. From a secure position, reach or throw a rescue aid and follow dispatcher instructions. If you fall in, control your breathing, use ice picks to pull toward the direction you came from and roll away from the opening. Seek urgent help and warmth.

At fairs, identify exits, first-aid points and a family meeting place. Keep routes clear and follow staff directions. In Malaysia, call 999 for emergencies; overseas, use the destination’s emergency number.

Make room for a little wonder

Before you travel

Read the host organiser’s latest location, timing, access and weather notices. Our event profiles are educational. Office hours do not describe festival opening times.

Bring drinking water, a reusable cup, essential personal items and a charged phone. For overseas winter activities, add insulating layers, waterproof outerwear and appropriate footwear.

Everyone belongs

Ask each venue about step-free access, accessible toilets, quiet areas, seating and assistance. Snow and temporary paths can change access conditions. Our team can help identify questions to discuss with the host organiser.

Food & comfort

Our editorial food features focus on non-alcoholic drinks and seasonal dishes. Ask food teams about ingredients, shared equipment and preparation. Halal status must be checked directly with the food provider; do not infer certification from a dish name.
